Every so often, people have to empty their dream catchers. This may be harder for some people than most for one maim reason. Have you ever experienced a nightmare so dark and twisted it woke you up in a shock? For some, this happens regularly and is referred to as a night terror. Night terrors can be very intense to the point that they make people afraid of falling asleep, but dream catchers take away that fear. Night after night, dream catchers trap in all of those horrible thoughts, so that you can rest in peace. Therefore, you must empty them before they get out of hand. Like energy, dreams cannot be destroyed, only passed on. That is why they must be emptied, but how exactly does one accomplish such a task? There are many steps to emptying a dream catcher, many of which come at a price. As risky as it could be, disposing of the contents is mandatory, for if you don’t a greater price will be paid for your lack of responsibility. First of all, the god of Voodoo controls all dreams and nightmares. To empty a dream catcher, they (voodoo god) must be summoned. But it isn’t just that simple. If you want them to take away your nightmares, you’re going to have to make a deal. The Voodoo god gives you their offer and you comply. You only get one offer per visit, so be smart about it. Secondly, the god of voodoo will be expecting gifts from you-
“Wait! Wait! Wait!” interrupted a worried young man. His name was DeAndre. He was tall and thin, he stood up awkwardly in his own body, almost like a newborn deer first learning to walk. His skin was a rich brown color and his eyes glowed like emeralds. He had long kinky hair, which he wore up in a bun like pony tail.
“What is it?” asked the man that stood in the darkest corner of the room. The only thing illuminating his features was an old dying candle flickering, as if it were dancing towards its own death. The man straightened himself out as if expecting a snarky remark from DeAndre... a few moments went by, but in a sudden break of silence-
“You expect ME! To summon a god in MY! House?” DeAndre blurted out as he gasped for a deep breath. His brain spun from all the new information he was trying to process.
“Well, you want to empty your dreamcatcher... don’t ‘cha?” the man replied with one eyebrow cocked up.
“Well... yeah, but doesn’t this all seem too much?” DeAndre said, his voice drowned in ignorance.
“There’s no time for you to complain about this. The ritual can only be done at night, so we better get started.” and with that the man started at the door.
“Where are you going?” DeAndre asked, his voice trailing behind the man. The man didn’t stop to reply, he only kept on walking. DeAndre decided to follow him into town, where they’d get all the supplies for the cleansing of his dreamcatcher.
Later that night DeAndre was buzzing back and forth around his living room. His hands were sweaty and his knees seemed to lock up every now and then. He kept on rubbing his forehead and mumbling to himself. “What if something goes wrong, what if I can’t meet their needs, what if-”
“Oh, will you just shut up.” croaked the man. “You’re going to do just fine, as long as you do as you’re told.”
“I- I know but what if I just can’t?” DeAndre said as he examined every inch of their ritual set up. The man walked up by him and patted him on the back as an attempt to comfort him.
“Don’t worry too much, the God of Voodoo isn’t such a bad guy... all they want is something in return for taking your nightmares.” The man attempted a smile.
“You’re right- you’re right.” said DeAndre as he looked up at the man. “Thank you for helping me out, Ringo.” he smiled back at Ringo. With this they both started to assemble their table of offerings for their guest of honor. DeAndre reached for a tall glass and set it.
Once the table was assembled Ringo took out an old withering piece of paper and began to chant what was sloppily written on it. DeAndre could only stare and wait until it was all over. With a loud fizz and the sound of a champagne bottle bursting *POOF*! The God of Voodoo had been summoned. They were long and spindly like a cloud of smoke. DeAndre couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He was really going to complete this ritual. With that he negotiated with the God of Voodoo, they took his nightmares, and the ritual was over. Now DeAndre and Ringo could go back to living life as normal people... until that unfortunate time came back around, where they’d have to yet again empty the dream catcher.
Student's Choice Reflection
1. Explain the process you went through to write this paper.
First, I picked out a prompt. Secondly, I typed out a rough draft and got back feedback from Ms. Lehmann. Lastly, I fixed grammar errors and typed up my final draft.
2. Is this paper a narrative, expository, or argumentative?
This is a narrative, because it isn't meant to inform or state a point of view. It is meant to entertain in the form of a story.
3. Tell me one thing you learned from writing this paper.
I learned that I am not the best at planning out endings to stories, but I can get better at it.
